Sustainability in Plant-Based Foods

Does size matter? When it comes to foodservice packaging, it just might.

Does size matter? When one-liter packs disappear fast, going bigger can make a lot of sense. Discover our 2 × 5 L Bag-in-Box for high-volume foodservice

When one liter doesn't last very long

If you run a busy café, restaurant or professional kitchen, you know how quickly one-liter packs can pile up.

One opened, then another, then another. And when you’re using oat drinks or other plant-based products in high volumes every day, those individual packs add up fast.

So, does everything really need to come one liter at a time?

We don’t think so.

Our 2 × 5 L Bag-in-Box gives foodservice businesses a bigger-format option for products they use a lot of. Each box contains two separate 5-liter bags, giving you 10 liters of product in total.

Instead of ten individual one-liter packs, you have two 5-liter bags.

Sometimes, bigger simply makes more sense.

Less to handle. More to work with.

The idea is refreshingly simple: put more product in each pack.

For cafés, restaurants, hotels, catering operations and professional kitchens where volumes can be high, that means fewer individual packs entering the daily workflow.

When it’s time to use the product, simply take one of the 5 L bags out of the box, cut it open and pour the contents into the container, tank or bowl used in your operation.

No complicated new routine. Just fewer individual packs to open and handle – and more product to work with in each one.

And once the product is used? There are fewer individual empty packs to deal with, too.

Less packaging per liter? Now we're talking.

The larger format isn't only about making everyday handling simpler. There is another advantage: less packaging material per liter of product.

Based on our packaging specifications and production data, our 5 L Bag-in-Box uses 27.6% less total packaging material per liter compared with our specified 1 L Elopak Pure-Pak format.*

That works out to 38.90 grams of primary and secondary packaging per liter for Bag-in-Box, compared with 53.70 grams per liter for the 1 L format.

We could simply call that a more sustainable choice. But we'd rather tell you exactly what we've measured:

More product, with less packaging material per liter.

That's a difference you can actually put a number on.

Going bigger makes a difference on the road, too

The benefits of fitting more product into a larger format start before the Bag-in-Box ever reaches your kitchen or coffee bar.

Our actual pallet and loading data shows that the Bag-in-Box format allows 21,120 liters of product to be loaded per truck, compared with 19,800 liters in our 1 L format, based on 33 pallets in the same type of truck.

That's 6.7% more product per truck.*

It might not be the first thing you think about when choosing a format for your oat drink. But when you're working with larger volumes, how efficiently all those liters get from us to you starts to matter too.

More product on each truck means making better use of the space that's already there.

One bigger format. Plenty of possibilities.

Bag-in-Box isn't just for standard oat drink.

The 5 L format is available for a broad range of products from our plant-based portfolio, including:

Oat Drink in different flavours, Oat Barista in different flavours, Oat Cooking, Fava Whipping and Oat Soft Serve.

That means the same larger format can work across very different foodservice applications – from oat drinks disappearing behind a busy coffee bar to cooking, whipping and soft serve in professional kitchens.

And because The Green Dairy is a private-label producer, the product on the inside is made for your brand.

We work with customers across the Nordics, Europe and Southeast Asia to produce plant-based products for their own ranges, with Bag-in-Box available as one of our packaging formats.

Made for places where one liter doesn't last very long

Let's be clear: bigger isn't automatically better.

If you only use a small amount of product, a one-liter pack can make perfect sense. Bag-in-Box is for the other kind of day – the one where you open one pack and it feels like you're reaching for the next one five minutes later.

Busy cafés. Restaurants. Hotels. Catering. Professional kitchens. And other foodservice operations where plant-based products are used in volume.

For those environments, moving from 1 L to 5 L is a pretty simple idea:

Fewer individual packs to open and handle.
Less packaging material per liter.
More product per shipment.
And more product in every pack.

So, does size matter?

Not always.

But when you're going through liters and liters of product every day, a bigger format can make a lot of sense.

Our Bag-in-Box packs two 5 L bags into one box, giving foodservice businesses another way to buy and work with the plant-based products they use in volume.

Sometimes, 5 L simply beats 1 L.
